چکیده

The deposit feeding burrowing crab Chasmagnathus granulatus and the suspension feeding burrowing clam Tagelus plebeius occur sympatrically in the intertidal flats of the south western Atlantic estuarine environments. Common ecological theory predicts negative effects of deposit feeder bioturbation on co-occurring suspension feeders up to complete exclusion of the latter. By means of descriptive and experimental approaches performed at the Mar Chiquita coastal lagoon (37°32′S–57°19′W; Argentina) we show that within beds of C. granulatus (i) frequency of clam shell damage is higher, (ii) shell geometry shows proportionally shorter shells, (iii) clam condition is lower and, (iv) shell growth rates are lower. The negative effect of crabs increases towards lower tidal level. Changes in shell geometry are only detectable in damaged shells, suggesting that this pattern results from direct physical effects by crabs. The negative effect of crabs on clam condition and growth is mediated by indirect mechanisms. Burrowing and migrating of crabs may disrupt clam feeding and/or may force clams to invest more energy into escape movements and burrow rebuilding, thus leaving less energy for growth. Our study indicates that the adaptation of T. plebeius to a highly dynamic intertidal environment enables the clam to coexist with this strong bioturbator, too. The additional stress inflicted by C. granulatus does affect the clam negatively, but is not sufficiently high to eliminate it from the system. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Impact of burrowing crabs on C and N sources, control, and transformations in sediments and food webs of SW Atlantic estuaries

The intertidal burrowing crab Chasmagnathus granulatus is the dominant species in soft bare sediments and vegetated intertidal areas along the SW Atlantic estuaries (southern Brazil, 28° S, to northern Patagonia, 42° S). C. granulatus creates burrows that can reach densities of 60 burrows m–2, and its burrowing activities increase water and organic matter content of sediments. To evaluate the l...

Effect of the burrowing crab Chasmagnathus granulata (Dana) on the benthic community of a SW Atlantic coastal lagoon

This study evaluated the effect of the burrowing crab Chasmagnathus granulata on the benthic community in mudflats of the Mar Chiquita coastal lagoon (Argentina, 378 459 S, 578 269 W). A significantly higher abundance of the polychaete Laeonereis acuta was found inside the C. granulata crab bed than outside. However, L. acuta abundance decreased in summer probably due to the greater activity of...

FIRST REPORT OF Perkinsus chesapeaki IN DELAWARE BAY RAZOR CLAMS, Tagelus plebeius

The protozoan oyster pathogen Perkinsus marinus has infected populations of Crassostrea virginica along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts of North America since at least the 1940s. Until recently, it was the only Perkinsus sp. pathogen known to exist in the region. During the past decade, independent laboratories have reported P. chesapeaki (now synonymous with P. andrewsi) in softshell clams (Mya a...

Reproductive cycle of Tagelus plebeius (Mollusca: Bivalvia) in the estuary of the Cachoeira River, Ilhéus, Bahia, Brazil.

This study characterized the reproductive cycle of the stout razor clam Tagelus plebeius in the estuary of the Cachoeira River, Ilhéus, Bahia, northeastern Brazil. Samples of 20 animals per collection were taken biweekly from August 2005 to August 2006. The 480 specimens were measured on the antero-posterior axis (length) and then removed from the shell. After macroscopic analysis, the gonads w...

Local and geographic variation in grazing intensity by herbivorous crabs in SW Atlantic salt marshes

Coupling experiments at small spatial scales with large-scale surveys can help to generalize experimental results across large spatial scales. The goal of the present study was to evaluate patterns of crab herbivory within and, at a larger scale, between many southwestern (SW) Atlantic salt marshes. Hence, we conducted experiments in an Argentinean salt marsh to elucidate the effects of crab Ch...
